Do you think you know everything there is to know about Anna Vissi?

"I used to steal pennies from my father's grocery store and buy pieces of fabric! Then I created sexy shirts with them."
Childhood memories
1970
"What I remember from my childhood is that since I was 12, I liked singing in public. I went to a school for girls in Larnaca and was a very good student. I participated in all school events, musical or theatrical ones. I liked playing various childish games, like hopscotch. I started my high school studies in Larnaca and stayed there until the 4th grade. Then we moved to Athens where I finished my studies at the 6th High School of Kipseli, achieving an overall grade of 17 out of 20." Manina magazine, 1977
"Ever since I can remember myself, the only thing I cared about was to sing. I remember family excursions with my parents and my sisters Lia and Niki. On the back seat I would always stand out - I would shout louder than the others - until my mother would say 'Be quiet everybody, now it's time for Anna to sing'" Se mikos kai platos (TV show), Antenna TV, 1996
First steps
1973
"I came to Greece in 1972 and went through an audition. I was only 13 years old. People from Lyra and MINOS heard me, but I had always wanted to join MINOS, as many famous singers were there. I was a kid, you see, and I was impressed by all those things. Thus, I chose Matsas (owner of MINOS), who was also very interested in me. That's how I finally moved to Greece in 1973, signed with MINOS and settled down. I remember that as I entered MINOS's building, the first person I saw and was introduced to was Giorgos Dalaras. Luck! Through all these, my mother was always by my side. She spoke on behalf of me, I owe everything to her.", Diplo Tilerama magazine, 1983
1975
"I just want to be educated. I don't intent to pursue law as a profession. Law school provides this education. Then, in some way, it can be useful to my job." Romantzo, 195
1976
"All of my collaborators showed me sympathy and understanding in my first steps. I consider myself lucky, as I quickly entered the system, released albums and found people that helped me... and all these happened in a very short time" Simerini newspaper, 1977
1977
"The lyrics and the music of the song I sang in that year’s Festival were composed by Doros Georgiades. When he wrote it, he called me, we rehearsed it in the studio and we sent it to qualify. And indeed it qualified, leading us to victory. Initially I had some inhibitions. But the fact that I wanted to do something entirely mine gave me strength and I appeared fearless in front of the audience. My success is shared with Doros Georgiades, because he wrote a song that I could make something out of. What I need to stress is that what I admire the most in this song are its lyrics, which refer to a very important issue of our times. Furthermore, I was surprised by the people's love. George Krimizakis and I went as representatives to check the voting procedure and we realised that the song was getting almost the same amount of votes from all areas (in Greece). When I finally knew that the audience was rewarding us for our effort, everything was done for me and I didn’t care if I was going to win the first prize. Manina mag., 1977
1981
"It's trully an honor for me to collaborate with this man and be friends, at the same time. I realize this now as I am growing up. Nikos is the one I know, my little boy, the man I married, the man whose songs I've sung, the man I've hated from time to time as a husband, the friend I've disagreed with. He's the man I've thrown things to, I've had fights with. We reached the bottom but also got much higher to the skies, got wings and flew together... He is all these things! And now, that we're closer than ever to each other, I keep realizing more and more how lucky I am to have such a man by my side... And, do you know what's the good thing about him? He never loses himself. I have felt lost sometimes...", Interview to Sfera Radio, Athens, 11/05
1982
"'Mono i agapi' is one of those songs I write alone in moments of thinking and which I keep for myself. This song specifically, was composed a long time ago and I'd never try to sing it here, as it doesn’t match the contemporary Greek musical taste. It talks about love in our lives, compared to the vanity of other things. The tempo is slow and melodic, but has also some elation. It starts with piano and ends with wind instruments... It's something completely different compared to everything I have presented till now.". Romantso magazine, 1982
1989
"At the end of the line, I’m satisfied. Of course I may rush and blame those who do it, but I must be doing something right if they want to imitate it. So, let them imitate me!", (When questioned about other singers who imitated her look or the music style of her album "Fotia"), Pop Corn magazine, 1991
1991
"One is tired when doing things that he doesn’t feel good about. For me "Rex" was the outburst of so many years, as I was offered an amazing place, in which I had the opportunity to present some aspects of me I always had but had never shown. So, I never felt I did something tiring. Actually I adored the idea of doing such a show. I had always wanted to do it.", Pop corn magazine, 1991

-Yes, I’ve thought about it and rejected it that very second!", interview on Mad TV, 2001

"This year I may have not walked the streets of Plaka dressed as a pupil like I did in 1973, but I came back after 20 whole years, carrying a bag full of songs, sounds, happiness and bitterness, applause and many people who have believed in me, supported me and loved me, rewarding my effort in this way."Anna's note on the "Live!" album
1994
"They say one travels to discover a new place. I might have travelled to discover Greece at the end... Some may be surprised listening to these songs, some may say this is what they've always wanted. I empathize both emotions, having the strongest faith of all....Anna's personal note on "Re!"

"When I sing these simple songs from Cyprus I shiver and cry. And I don't know what touches me the most: the music or my homeland? Cyprus is inside those ten songs. Her beauty, her people, her love, her women, her warriors, her children, her pain, her courage, her struggles, her pride, her eternity... I believe to have helped a bit with my effort so that our traditional songs will never be forgotten.", Anna's note on the booklet of her cd "O! Kipros"
"'Me agapi Anna' TV show was a mistake. This thing has nothing to do with me. I am a singer, not a tv host. Parts of this show were very funny and I liked them. For example, shooting with Chaikalis (actor), was one of the highlights. I didn’t like it though, when I had to take an interview.", Interview "Se mikos ke platos", tv show, Antenna tv, 1996

"I cannot count all the things that have happened with Karvelas. I would wait for him to come when we were supposed to sing the duet at Ribas' and he would be eating at Glyfada. I was always in distress but he appeared on time when he wanted to! Once, when he was singing alone, he got on stage with mud on his shoes and messed up the dance floor!" Anna Vissi Down Town magazine, 2005
"I don’t have any bad feelings regarding the bouzoukia. Firstly, not all bouzoukia are the same. There are very badly done ones and there are those where even Alexiou sings. We all do bouzoukia. And Mr. Dalaras did bouzoukia when he went to bouzoukia, right? Everybody accepts flowers and is keen on them. Everybody has loosened a little. Intellectuals are relaxed and those who had less quality became more qualitative. So I consider that this is what I always did, I always had freedom in my repertory."
1999
"Everyone calls me the Madonna of Greece because I’m constantly reinventing myself, but I think I’m more like Bruce Springsteen, because I play for three or four hours at a time. I like to break the rules, mess up the place, make mistakes, fall on the stage. I hate when you go to a concert and nothing real happens. You need to rock it."
2000
"You discover yourself through time, life and experiences. You discover, you lose, you reinvent yourself on another level. It’s a circle - you live, go on, get older and learn. It’s so nice to get older. Your mind becomes prettier, it’s refreshed because it can get rid of anything bad, unnecessary and fake. It’s unfair that the skin and the body age. They betray you."

On an interview she doesn’t deny the possibility of another wedding. However she doesn’t plan anything since she could only marry because of spontaneous passion. Mad tv, 25/12/2002

'Things in Cyprus work in a completely different way... It's my homeland, they are my people, it's one big - huge hug full of love... In Cyprus I don't only have many feelings but each concert I give is a deposit of my soul. I have the duty to give my best to my compatriots.
The concerts in Cyprus fill me up, make me stronger and give me power, charge my batteries, nurture me. That's what makes me go on. My compatriots with their presence in the stadium and with their love refresh and empower me. I owe them a big and true thank you’

"When you suffer from a disease, commiting suicide is not the way to cure yourself. Cure comes slowly and in other ways."

"In every album we’ve made, me and Nikos think that there is a mistake there, either in lyrics or music and orchestration. I think that this album contains no mistakes.", Megalicious chart live, Mega Channel, 11/05

28/2/2006 Anna gives a revealing interview to Giorgos Kapoutzides and Zeta Makripoulia, during the tv show "Feel the fun" (NET television). The interview takes place at Club 22 in Athens. The placed is stuffed with fans, hours before Anna’s arrival. The result is a very touching and emotional show, since the hosts and the team preparing the show have many surprises for Anna: a visit to Cyprus with her daughter, a tour in places she used to visit when she was younger, an interview with her parents and relatives on the island, memories from her past and various celebrities wishing her good luck at the contest. The shooting for the tv show lasts for more than 4 hours, but despite the exhaustion, Anna is very friendly towards the staff, the audience, the fans and the hosts of the show...

"We got along well from the very first moment, because we're similar. We're not divas. During our discussion he said he was going to give a concert in Cyprus and I told him that since I did not manage to go see him in Greece, I would go see him in my birthplace. Then he proposed to me: "It would be an honour for me if we would sing together. How would you like learning the words of 1973?". I liked this song because it was symbolic. That was the year I left Cyprus, full of dreams and hope for a career, and now I was going back to sing that song with him. It was an honour for me to sing with him too. The previous night I was sitting with a CD player stuck on my ears trying to learn the words and the music. We only did one rehearsal with a guitar. the only thing he told me before going on stage was "Don't pay any attention to whatever I do while we sing. just face me.". It was a wonderful moment. Magical. That night before going to sleep, he sent me a sweet message, saying "Thanks a lot, I had a great time with you on stage" Down Town mag, 7/08
"Apagorevmeno was not in the list of songs to be included in the album. The album was almost done and Patrick Leonard was still in Athens, when I remembered that we had a song I liked, but it was written in English. I played it to Eleana Vrachali one day and asked her whether it could inspire her to write lyrics in Greek. The next day she had it done. We listened to it at around midnight in the studio, I turned off the lights and sang it only once. I saw Patrick (he doesn’t know any Greek) and he was touched. That's when I understood how powerful this song is. That's why I made it my first single. Because I didn't want to start off the album with something resembling the "old Vissi", something that was expected of me or a typical radio hit.", DownTown mag, 18/12/2008

"Friday night was one of the most strange nights of my life. The ugliest, the most tragic one. Within seconds, my great joy and lust to get on stage and sing in front of my compatriots after 4 years, turned into an unexpected drama.", message for the loss of her close friend and collaborator.

“I'm not afraid to go against my usual image. Although sometimes it seems that I am strategically organized in everything I do, this is not true. I'm not just fearless in spoiling my image but I'm also passionate about breaking the rules and leaving everything I've done behind for something new. I'm kind of like Emma Thomson in "APOMEINARIA MIAS MERAS". As a person I always try to be the first who will give something in a relationship in my personal life or on my work and then I expect from the others to give something back.” , Interview at VimaGazino, 5/12/10

“Good question (laughs). I think even I’m confused. I am happy to be in a position where I appeal to the youngsters, to those who were with me when I made my first steps and to even older people. One thing is for sure, I do not have everyone on side because it is matter of taste and style as to what each person likes to listen to. I was never so stupid to think that I was liked by everyone. I am not that selfish."

“I got a human divorce with Karvela but never an artistic one. We have only never worked together for a total of 2 years and, strictly speaking, I have only ever released one album with Niko which was “Apagorevmeno”. I believe that the break and distancing did us good. When two people are together constantly, at some point they need their own space. They need some space to breath. Niko and I are just friends, we are siblings”

“I regret some of my collaborations because I realised during the course of them that we didn't suit one another. Everything from the songs, the varying audiences to difference of opinions, sometimes, things do not work. It is really hard to go out there each night when you are not feeling the collaboration. I never intentionally did a job thinking only of the pay packet. I give my all to all that I do as if it were my last night on the stage up until the last note of a song, whatever the time might be. When, however, you make a wrong choice and realise that your motives were not purely artistic then you have to sit back and say “well, it serves me right”. Everyone has, at some point, done it for the money and on the few occasions I acted irresponsibly, I paid the price for my decisions. And I promised myself that I would never do it again!”

“I have been in the Church’s firing line twice now. The first time, they accused me of acting unsuitably because I would sing and…shut my eyes (1970). The second time, it was while we were doing the first run of Demons the musical (1990), the Church presumed Karvelas and I were “Satanists” because our rock-opera broached themes of Satanism and Demonism."

“- What has been your career highlight so far?”
I think it was when I played the role of Mala. The plot, the music and the period of my life at the time will forever be engraved in my body and soul. When I look back at that play, the emotion I feel is far greater and different than for anything else that I have done since.”
